Benefits Handbook Links - Updated February 2023
Upon agreement between you and Venable, family leave may be taken on a reduced schedule, during which the 16 work weeks of leave may be taken over a period of no more than 24 consecutive work weeks. Pay Status During Leave. Under the provisions of the DC FMLA, you may elect to use either paid or unpaid leave. If you elect to use paid leave, your pay will be determined by the amount of available accrued but unused sick and PTO leave as of the beginning of the leave. If appropriate, you may be paid short-term disability benefits during the leave in accordance with our disability policy. Once your paid leave benefits are exhausted, you will be in an unpaid status during the remainder of the leave. Sick and PTO leave will not accrue during any period for which you are receiving short-term disability benefits or are in an unpaid status. Scheduling Leave/Notice Required. If you have reason to have at least 30 days’ notice of the need for family or medical leave, provide notice to us of that need at least 30 days before the leave is to begin. If you cannot provide 30 days’ notice, then provide notice as soon as possible prior to the date on which you wish the leave to begin. In the case of foreseeable leave for medical reasons, make a reasonable effort to schedule the medical treatment for you or your family member in a manner that does not unduly disrupt your work at Venable. If an emergency prevents you from letting us know of the need for family or medical leave, request leave not more than two business days after the leave begins prior to the first day of absence. If you are personally unable to provide notice of the need for FMLA leave, someone can provide notice on your behalf. Effect on Benefits and Reemployment Rights. The benefits and re-employment rights you are entitled to under the DC FMLA are similar to those provided under the federal FMLA.
